Scream, Stomp, Clap: D.C.’s Only Middle School Step Team Is Ready For More Competition
The hallways of Kelly Miller Middle School in Northeast D.C. echo with screams, stomps and claps as the school’s step team practices combinations for an upcoming competition.
The eight students on the team shout “don’t make me upset!” before entering into a rapidly paced combination of steps and digs — a moves where students clap between their legs. Stepping, a form of percussive dance, requires participants to use their entire bodies to make sound.
